Sometimes songs appear to me hook-first. Despite all the layers of musical knowledge and love, I am still a sucker for a catchy hook. This song is a prime example of this. It holds many of the same themes of the album: regret, forgiveness, self-reflection, and gave me a space to succinctly address the codependent behavioral patterns that have been a struggle for me in many relationships. This was also the first song I recorded and mixed for the album and as a result has a turbulent, rough sound that I enjoy when it’s juxtaposed with a song so unabashedly catchy.

Lyrics

I remember the face you made
In the kitchen and far away
you were filled with endless hope
I remember the day it broke

The way you saw me, the way it felt
I wasn’t there, i was somebody else
Something breaks and something mends but
I didn't think it would lead us to a dead end

I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
what I could never help
I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
I never wanted to hurt you, and that’s why I could never help

Let me share this full moon heart
and the memories that tear me apart
I thought the real truth would make you break
Now I know that was the biggest mistake

I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
what I could never help
I never wanted to hurt you, I only wanted to help
I never wanted to hurt you, and that’s why I could never help

I never wanted to hurt you, (I never) I only wanted to help
(I still love you)
I never wanted to hurt you, (I never) I only wanted to help
(I still love you) what I could never help
I never wanted to hurt you, (I never) I only wanted to help
(I still love you)
I never wanted to hurt you, and that’s why I could never help
