From the recording The Real Truth
Another favorite place that inspired many songs on the album is Lake Michigan. I walked from my apartment to the lake almost every day in the aftermath of the band’s break up, even through the frigid Wisconsin winters. The lake would be a new shade, texture, or turbulence every day and I took it as a reminder that all things change and all things can be faced. One day in April, I came upon the spring’s first swarm of mosquitos and was struck by how they were reborn after what seemed like an endless, desolate winter. These reflections led to this song.
Lyrics
Something’s born between the water and the stones
And their rising makes a swarm into a home
They ride the wind across the levee
and they’re gone
There’s an itching that hides behind the skin
Like a purpose for the person I have been
Trying to shoo it always sends it down
within
There’s nothing here but empty space
nothing here that I can't face
Is there a place where all the colors run to green?
Where wind are gentle and thoughts are feathery
When I am lost will you go looking there
for me
There’s nothing here but empty space
nothing here that I can't face
