From the recording The Real Truth
I rarely write songs directly for one person, I prefer to write about the processes and patterns within me that keep appearing in relationships. This song, however, was written for two old friends. We grew up together, but had a falling out when the adults that we became turned out to be incompatible. I hold a lot of regret and sadness to this day, but I have a prevailing hope that there is something mendable at the core of the love we once shared. At the very least there is forgiveness and growth which I believe can lead us to a relationship in which there are no more villains, no more punishment, only new songs to play.
Lyrics
Your flowers are dying in my window
They took their time drying out
Maybe they’ll feed the garden
And give something new the will to sprout
The silence tells a story
Of how we got in this mess
How you need saving
From whatever comes next
Riding the waveform mountain
I try my best to get away
I’ll meet you in the next sunrise
And hope that you have some new song to play
All that I remember
The tears and the shame
You made yourself the villain
Then the punishment came
